How to Obtain Employer Identification Numbers
The taxpayer identification number by which the IRS processes your tax returns as a business is called the Employer Identification Number (EIN). All employers must apply for an EIN, as this number identifies your business to the Internal Revenue Service, much the same as your employees are identified by their Social Security numbers.
Applying for an EIN can be done easily online or by phone. Since the IRS will want to know information about your business, you may want to complete IRS Form SS-4 before you start, so that you will have all of the information about your company readily available.
Once you have received your EIN, write this information on the SS-4, sign and date it, and keep it for your records. After you obtain your federal ID number, contact the states in which you do business to obtain withholding and unemployment identification numbers. In certain states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and Colorado, it is also necessary to obtain local identification numbers. Special local taxes can also apply, such as the San Francisco Payroll Expense Tax and the Seattle Employee Hours Tax.
